“Ian McDonald’s handmade instruments are a brilliant hybrid of traditional design and modern approach. I trust his instruments in the studio and on stage to deliver a great performance each time I pick one up.”

Cigar Box Guitars

Welcome to Just Play The Blues

I have been in the joinery business for over 30 years and I also own a successful kitchen business with my brother. I made cigar box guitars more as a hobby but in recent times I have had more and more enquiries to make one of a kind models. With my vast experience in the joinery field and a fully loaded workshop I can complete most builds within a four/ six week period.

Payments are via PayPal and are billed in advance as follows: 50% deposit to proceed with order then balance paid before dispatch. All guitars are unique and prices vary from one product to another; we do keep a limited stock of acoustic versions.

All cigar box guitars and amps are shipped out first class recorded and are well packaged.

All guitars are autographed by myself and carry a certificate of authenticity.

If you have any questions or would like to talk to me regarding a bespoke cigar box guitar then please feel free to contact me on 07900 882991, or alternatively you can email me using the enquiry form on the Contact Us page of this website.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Just Play the Blues

I’ve just tested this bad boy out 😃🇬🇧🇬🇧
I wanted to create a basic guitar with so much low end to it whilst allowing the melody to come out . Kind of “ Motörhead “ on steroids using the Diddley Bow theme . Given the tension in the neck this was only ever going to be a 2 string . I decided on the fretless concept but keeping the action as low as possible so it is fun to play . I’m not a Bass Player but this sounds the nuts . I love keeping things simple with two broom handles as a neck biscuit jointed together with a Walnut fretboard and through the body design I think it’s as basic as it can be but boy does it sound good . Tuned to a very low A with the octave on the second string this is a delight to play .
Will do a video at some point providing the shoulder behaves it self

Just Play the Blues

The new prototype 2 string Broom handle Diddley Bow is underway . I’ve spliced two broom handles together with ramin biscuit jointers . I’ve glued on the Walnut fretboard ready for the next stage . This guitar will have a low bass string and an octave string . I’m probably going to tune it in E .
The box for the prototype is a cigar box .
Great fun to make
Update when next stage is done .
